Cable selection, derating, routing, protection, and colour coding requirements for UAE construction site temporary and permanent wiring.
Cable Standards
All cables used on UAE construction sites must comply with IEC 60227 (PVC-insulated cables) or IEC 60245 (rubber-insulated cables) for flexible cables, and IEC 60502 for power cables. The Abu Dhabi DoE EWR 2020 and Dubai Building Code 2021 both require cables to be selected and installed in accordance with IEC 60364-5-52. Cables passing on or over walkways must comply with BS 4363 requirements.

Cable Derating — UAE Climate
Cable current-carrying capacity must be derated for UAE ambient conditions. The standard IEC 60364-5-52 derating tables are based on 30°C ambient. In the UAE, outdoor ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45–50°C in summer, and cable surface temperatures on rooftops or in direct sunlight can exceed 70°C. Cables must be derated accordingly — this typically reduces the current-carrying capacity by 25–40% compared to standard tables.

Undersized cables in the UAE heat are a leading cause of cable fires on construction sites. Always apply UAE-specific derating factors, not standard European tables.
Cable Routing and Protection
Cables on UAE construction sites must be routed to minimise mechanical damage, trip hazards, and exposure to heat, chemicals, and UV radiation. All cables crossing vehicle routes must be protected in heavy-duty conduit or cable ramps. Cables must not be run through water, oil, or chemicals.

Colour Coding
The UAE follows IEC 60446 colour coding for conductors. Brown = Line 1 (L1), Black = Line 2 (L2), Grey = Line 3 (L3), Blue = Neutral (N), Green/Yellow = Protective Earth (PE). Old British colour coding (Red/Yellow/Blue/Black/Green) must not be used in new installations.

Mixing old and new colour coding on the same site is a serious safety hazard. All cables must be clearly labelled at termination points. Any old-colour-coded cables found on site must be clearly labelled "OLD COLOURS — SEE CIRCUIT SCHEDULE".
