Breakers, MCBs & LCBs
MCB, MCCB, LCB, and fuse selection, breaking capacity, coordination, and installation requirements for UAE construction site distribution systems.
Circuit Breaker Standards
All circuit breakers used on UAE construction sites must comply with IEC 60898 (MCBs for household and similar installations) or IEC 60947-2 (MCCBs for industrial use). The Dubai Building Code 2021 requires that general assemblies for construction sites conform to BS 4363 and BS EN 61439. Breaking capacity must be sufficient for the prospective short-circuit current (PSCC) at the point of installation.
MCB standard
IEC 60898 (household/similar) or IEC 60947-2 (industrial)
criticalMCCB standard
IEC 60947-2
criticalMinimum breaking capacity — site DB
6 kA (10 kA recommended for main incomer)
criticalADDC requirement (Abu Dhabi)
Minimum 25 kA Isc for main breakers (ADDC checklist)
criticalCoordination
Upstream breaker must have higher breaking capacity than downstream

MCB Trip Characteristics
MCB trip characteristics must be selected to match the load type. Type B MCBs trip at 3–5× rated current (suitable for resistive loads, lighting). Type C MCBs trip at 5–10× rated current (suitable for motors, transformers with moderate inrush). Type D MCBs trip at 10–20× rated current (suitable for high inrush loads such as welding equipment and large motors). On UAE construction sites, Type C is the most common for general circuits.
| Type | Instantaneous Trip Range | Typical Application | Common on UAE Sites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type B | 3–5× In | Lighting, resistive loads, cable protection | Site office lighting |
| Type C | 5–10× In | General power, motors, small transformers | Most site power circuits |
| Type D | 10–20× In | Welding sets, large motors, high inrush | Welding and heavy plant circuits |
LCBs (Line Circuit Breakers) and Isolators
Line Circuit Breakers (LCBs) — also referred to as main isolating switches or disconnectors — must be installed as the main incoming device on every site distribution board. The LCB must be capable of being locked in the open (off) position for LOTO purposes. On UAE construction sites, the main LCB must be rated for the full prospective fault current at the point of supply.
Main LCB / isolator
Required at top of every DB — lockable in open position
criticalRating
Must be rated for full prospective fault current at supply point
criticalPadlock provision
Lockout facility (padlock hasp) must be integral or fitted
criticalFour-pole isolator
Required for 3-phase supplies (switches all 4 conductors)
criticalLabelling
Clearly labelled with circuit reference and voltage
