The WHO's 2025 UAE scorecard reports an annual mean PM2.5 concentration of 42 µg/m³ — eight times the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³. The scorecard attributes 24% of stroke and ischaemic-heart-disease deaths to air pollution. Natural dust is an important background source, but construction dust, diesel exhaust, welding fume, silica, chemicals and poor indoor ventilation are controllable workplace exposures.

What to monitor

  • PM2.5 and respirable dust at task locations, not just site perimeter.
  • Respirable crystalline silica during cutting, grinding and demolition.
  • Welding fume and metal-fume exposures for fabricators.
  • VOCs from paints, adhesives and solvents in enclosed areas.
  • Indoor CO₂ as a proxy for ventilation adequacy in offices and cabins.

The control hierarchy still applies

Elimination and enclosure beat PPE every time. Use wet methods, on-tool extraction and local exhaust ventilation before reaching for a mask. Where respirators are the residual control, they need face-fit testing, exposure-based selection and health surveillance for the wearer.
