Fatigue, Long Hours, Occupational Disease and Psychosocial Health

The WHO scorecard reports that 16% of the UAE working-age population works 55+ hours per week, and eight deaths per 100,000 annually are from occupational disease vs two from injury. What management should actually change.

UAE HSE performance cannot be managed only through injury prevention. The WHO scorecard reports that 16% of the working-age population is exposed to working at least 55 hours per week; it also estimates eight deaths per 100,000 working-age people annually from diseases due to occupational risks, compared with two from occupational injuries. Heat, shift work, commuting, production pressure, isolation, ergonomics and multilingual workforces interact to increase error and chronic ill health.

What management should change

  • Fatigue limits and overtime caps — auditable, not aspirational.
  • Night-work review with a fixed schedule rather than rolling extensions.
  • Workload and incentive review — the schedule can be the hazard.
  • Welfare-facility standards and supervisor capability development.
  • Confidential mental-health support with a route that does not go through the line manager.
  • Ergonomic assessments for repetitive and static-posture tasks.
  • Exposure-based health surveillance for noise, silica, chemicals, heat.
  • Communication of controls in the languages your workers actually speak.

The board-level takeaway

For most UAE organisations, the immediate leadership agenda should be heat readiness, critical-risk verification, occupational driving, fire assurance and climate-law compliance. Environmental programmes should also move beyond policy statements to measured performance in carbon, water, waste, air emissions and chemical control.
