Restraint vs Fall Arrest
Work restraint prevents a person from reaching the fall edge at all and is always preferable to arrest. A fall arrest system allows a fall and then stops it, imposing forces on the body and requiring a rescue within minutes. If the lanyard can be adjusted so the edge cannot be reached, use restraint.

Access Equipment — UAE Code References
Personal fall-protection hardware is certified to BS EN standards, but the access equipment itself is governed by the Abu Dhabi ADOSH-SF Codes of Practice (v4.0, July 2024). Dubai sites cite the Dubai Municipality Code of Construction Safety Practice and Sharjah sites cite OSHJ codes for the same equipment; the technical controls are equivalent.

Fall Clearance Calculation
The single most common technical failure on UAE sites is clipping on where there is not enough clearance to arrest the fall — the person is stopped by the ground, not the lanyard. Calculate clearance before the work starts and record it in the RAMS.
