Pre-Task Briefings That Change What Crews Do

A briefing that lists generic hazards gets signed and forgotten. A short, task-specific briefing with a question for the crew gets remembered. How to run one.

Pre-Task Briefings That Change What Crews Do

On many UAE sites the briefing is a signature sheet. The supervisor reads a general topic, the crew signs, and the work starts. The sheet proves a meeting happened. It does not show that anyone understood the task.

Crews on UAE projects often speak several languages. A briefing that works for the supervisor can still miss half the crew.

Make it about today's task

  • Name the task and the location, not a general topic.
  • State the two or three hazards that matter for this task today.
  • Say what physically protects the crew, and who checks it.
  • Say what stops the work: the conditions in which anyone must stop and call the supervisor.

Keep it short, then ask

Keep it to a few minutes. Then ask one question that needs a real answer, such as: where is the nearest edge, and what is protecting you from it? Ask a different person each day.

Use the language of the crew

Brief in the languages the crew actually speak, use a drawing or the work area itself, and have a crew member repeat the key control in their own words. Translations are an aid; the supervisor remains responsible for making sure the briefing was understood.

Link it to the assessment

The briefing should come from the current method statement and risk assessment, and record the revision. If the method changed since the last briefing, that change leads the talk.

Record it properly

  • Task, location, date and time.
  • Revision of the method statement or assessment briefed.
  • Names of the crew present.
  • Any concerns the crew raised, and what was done about them.
"General practice guidance, not legal advice and not a statement of any authority's requirements. Permit, reporting, briefing and coordination rules are set by the applicable authority (for example ADOSH-SF in Abu Dhabi, Dubai Municipality, Trakhees, DSOA, JAFZA or the relevant emirate municipality), the client and the main contractor. Where they differ from this article, follow them."
