Occupational Hygiene & Construction Fire Assurance

Two exposures that rarely show up in a daily inspection: what workers breathe, hear and absorb over months, and what happens if the building catches fire while it is still being built. Both registers work item by item, with a stop-the-clock impairment permit for any fire system taken out of service.

Project and phase

Chemical inventory and SDS control, exposure monitoring, extraction and RPE, health surveillance.

Stream
  • OH-01 · Chemical inventory & SDS · On receipt + monthly review

    Live chemical inventory

    Open

Every substance on site is listed with product name, supplier, quantity, storage location and the activity it is used for — no substance enters site without inventory entry and approval.

Owner: HSE officer / stores · Evidence: Chemical inventory register with gate-approval column

  • OH-02 · Chemical inventory & SDS · On receipt + annual check

    SDS current and accessible

    Open

A current safety data sheet (issued or reviewed within the last 3 years) is held for every substance, available in a language the users understand, and physically accessible at the point of use.

Owner: HSE officer · Evidence: SDS folder / QR link at store and work face

  • OH-03 · Chemical inventory & SDS · Each new product

    Banned and restricted substances screen

    Open

Products are screened against banned/restricted lists (e.g. asbestos-containing materials, benzene-content solvents, specified isocyanates or lead compounds) and client-prohibited substances before purchase.

Owner: Procurement + HSE manager · Evidence: Screening record with decision and substitute chosen

  • OH-04 · Chemical inventory & SDS · Weekly

    Storage segregation and secondary containment

    Open

Incompatible chemicals are segregated, flammables held in ventilated fire-rated stores away from hot works and ignition sources, and liquids bunded to at least 110% of the largest container.

Owner: Stores / site manager · Evidence: Store inspection checklist

  • OH-05 · Chemical inventory & SDS · Each transfer

    Decanting, labelling and waste

    Open

Decanted containers carry the original hazard label and product name; contaminated waste, empty drums and rags go to a licensed waste contractor with transfer notes retained.

Owner: Environmental officer · Evidence: Waste transfer notes + labelling spot checks

  • OH-06 · Exposure monitoring · At mobilisation + on activity change

Exposure inventory (who, what, how long)

    Open

Similar exposure groups are defined for silica (concrete cutting, chasing, grinding), welding fume, solvents/isocyanates, lead, wood dust, noise and vibration, with tasks and durations recorded.

Owner: HSE manager / occupational hygienist · Evidence: Similar exposure group register

  • OH-07 · Exposure monitoring · Annually or on change

    Personal sampling programme

    Open

Personal sampling is scheduled for the highest-risk groups by a competent hygienist using accredited laboratory analysis, and results are compared against the applicable occupational exposure limit.

Owner: Occupational hygienist · Evidence: Sampling report with OEL comparison and lab accreditation

  • OH-08 · Exposure monitoring · Annually + on new plant

    Noise and vibration exposure

    Open

Noise mapping identifies hearing-protection zones; HAV exposure is tracked by tool and trigger time so daily exposure limits are managed by rotation, not by PPE alone.

Owner: HSE officer · Evidence: Noise survey + HAVS exposure log

  • OH-09 · Exposure monitoring · After each survey

    Results communicated to workers

    Open

Individuals are told their own monitoring results and what changed as a result — in a language they understand and within a defined period.

Owner: HSE manager · Evidence: Briefing record / individual result letters

  • OH-10 · Controls & RPE · Each shift

On-tool extraction and wet suppression first

    Open

Dust-generating tools use on-tool extraction (M/H-class) or water suppression as the primary control; RPE is a supplement, never the primary control.

Owner: Works supervisor · Evidence: Tool register + field verification records

  • OH-11 · Controls & RPE · On issue + annual re-test

RPE selection, fit testing and maintenance

    Open

RPE is selected against the actual contaminant and protection factor needed, face-fit tested per wearer, clean-shaven policy enforced, and filters changed on a stated schedule.

Owner: HSE officer · Evidence: Fit-test certificates + RPE maintenance log

  • OH-12 · Controls & RPE · Weekly

    Chemical emergency provision

    Open

Spill kits, eyewash and emergency showers are available within the distance stated by the SDS, tested on a schedule, and their location is briefed to the crews using the chemical.

Owner: HSE officer · Evidence: Eyewash/shower test log + spill kit inspection

  • OH-13 · Health surveillance · Annual / per protocol

Surveillance triggered by exposure, not by job title

    Open

Where exposure to silica, isocyanates, lead, noise or vibration is credible, health surveillance is scheduled with a competent medical provider and outcomes are tracked to a named action.

Owner: HR + HSE manager · Evidence: Health surveillance schedule and outcome register

  • OH-14 · Health surveillance · On engagement + as required

    Fitness-to-work interfaces

    Open

Heat-stress acclimatisation, respirator wear fitness and safety-critical roles are covered by fitness assessments, with restrictions communicated to supervision without disclosing clinical detail.

Owner: Occupational health provider · Evidence: Restriction notices held on the worker record

  • OH-15 · Health surveillance · Continuous

    Records retention and confidentiality

    Open

Exposure and health records are retained for the required period, stored confidentially, and can be produced for an authority or client audit without exposing clinical data to line management.

Owner: HR / document controller · Evidence: Retention schedule + access control record
