1. Hierarchy of Fall Protection
1. Eliminate the need to work at height. 2. Prevent falls with edge protection. 3. Fall restraint (lanyard stops you reaching the edge). 4. Fall arrest (harness + shock lanyard). 5. Minimise consequences (nets, airbags). Always use the highest practicable level.
2. Harness Inspection
Before every use: webbing (cuts, burns, chemical damage), stitching, D-rings, buckles, tag with certification date. Retire immediately if used to arrest a fall. Third-party inspection every 6 months.
3. Anchor Points
ADOSH-SF CoP 23.0 requires an anchorage to support a minimum dead weight of 2,450 kg (~24 kN) per person attached, engineered and verified for multiple users. Never anchor to guardrails, gas pipes, ductwork or unproven steel. Anchor above the D-ring where possible to reduce fall distance.
4. Scaffolds
Erected by trained scaffolders, tagged Green by a competent inspector every 7 days and after any disturbance. Do not use if tag is Red or missing.
5. MEWPs
Operator holds a valid UAE-recognised licence, harness with short restraint lanyard clipped inside basket, ground assessed for bearing, no travel with basket raised on rough terrain, second person trained in ground rescue.
6. Rescue Plan
Every WAH task must have a written rescue plan that can retrieve a suspended casualty within 15 minutes (suspension trauma sets in fast). Practise it. Do not rely on external emergency services alone.
