1. Why Induction Matters — Your First Day Is Your Highest-Risk Day

New workers are 3× more likely to be injured in their first month on site than experienced workers doing the same task. The site is unfamiliar, the hazards are unknown, the team and equipment and procedures are new, and there is pressure to fit in quickly. Every worker who has ever been seriously injured on a UAE construction site was someone else's new worker once. This induction exists to make sure that does not happen to you. It is not a tick-box exercise — it is the most important safety conversation you will have on this site. Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, employers must provide safety training before any worker begins any task. No worker starts work on this site without completing a full safety induction. No exceptions.

2. Zero-Tolerance Site Rules

ZERO-TOLERANCE (immediate removal from site): no work at height without fall arrest; no entry to excavations without a shoring check; no lifting without a banksman; no PTW bypass; no removal of edge protection. Speed limit 10 km/h on site — vehicles and plant only on designated routes, pedestrians only on marked walkways. Mandatory PPE at all times. No entry to red-barricaded exclusion zones without written authorisation. Smoking in the designated smoking area ONLY. Mobile phones prohibited in active work areas — welfare and offices only.

3. Your Rights and Responsibilities Under UAE Law

Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 gives you legal rights: the right to a safe workplace, the right to receive safety training in a language you understand, the right to correctly sized PPE at no cost, and — critically — the RIGHT TO REFUSE unsafe work where you reasonably believe there is imminent risk of serious injury. You are protected by law from retaliation for refusing unsafe work or reporting hazards. Your RESPONSIBILITIES: comply with site rules, wear your PPE correctly, use the PTW system, follow the MSRA, and report every hazard, near-miss and unsafe condition immediately. STOP-WORK AUTHORITY belongs to EVERY person on this site — from the site manager to the newest worker. If you see something unsafe, say 'STOP — I have a safety concern.'

4. Top Hazards and Mandatory PPE

TOP HAZARDS on UAE sites: falls from height, struck by moving plant, electrocution, excavation collapse, heat stress. UAE summer midday work ban (June–September): no outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM. MANDATORY BASELINE PPE — worn in ALL work areas, no exceptions: hard hat, high-visibility vest (Class 2 minimum), safety boots (steel toe cap + midsole), safety glasses. TASK-SPECIFIC PPE as specified by the MSRA: full-body harness for work at height, cut-resistant gloves for material handling, hearing protection above 85 dB, face shield for grinding/welding, chemical-resistant gloves and cooling neck wrap in summer. If your PPE is damaged, ill-fitting or missing — STOP WORK and report it. PPE is your LAST line of defence, not your first — engineering controls and safe systems come first.

5. Permits, MSRA and Pre-Task Briefings

PERMIT TO WORK (PTW) — for every high-risk task (work at height, hot work, confined space entry, excavation, electrical isolation, lifting) a PTW must be completed, signed and displayed at the work location BEFORE work begins. No PTW = no work. MSRA (Method Statement and Risk Assessment) — every task has an approved MSRA describing the safe method and the controls. Before every task, EVERY DAY, EVERY SHIFT, EVERY TASK, your supervisor conducts a PRE-TASK BRIEFING based on that MSRA — at the workface, in a language you understand. If you have not received the pre-task briefing, do not start the task. Ask.

6. Emergency Procedures and Your Commitment

EVACUATION — when you hear the continuous siren: STOP work immediately, do not collect belongings, walk (do not run) to the nearest emergency exit, follow the evacuation route to the assembly point, wait for the all-clear from the incident commander before re-entering. Never re-enter during an active emergency. MEDICAL EMERGENCY — call for help, do not move a seriously injured person unless there is further immediate danger, call UAE Ambulance 998. FIRE — raise the alarm, call 997, evacuate; do not fight a fire unless trained and safe. UAE numbers: Police 999 · Ambulance 998 · Fire 997. Know your assembly point BEFORE your first day of work — ask your supervisor to show you. Welcome to the team — every worker on this site, including you, deserves to go home safely tonight.
