How to conduct an effective pre-task briefing at the workface, the MSRA connection, the PTW link, and eliminating tick-box compliance.

1. Purpose
A face-to-face conversation at the workface, immediately before the task, that ensures every person knows the task, hazards, controls, roles and emergency actions.
2. Location & Timing
At the actual work location — not in the office. Immediately before the task. Repeated after any break longer than 30 minutes or any change in crew or conditions.
3. Content
What is the task, who does what, what are the top three hazards, what controls remove them, what PPE, what emergency signal, where is the assembly point, who is the first-aider.
4. Two-Way Verification
Never ask 'any questions?' — ask each worker to describe one hazard and one control in their own words. Language of the crew is used. Translator available when needed.
5. MSRA & PTW Link
The briefing references the MSRA and the PTW. Controls stated must match the paperwork. If the crew cannot restate the controls, work does not start.
6. Re-briefing
Any change — new person, new equipment, weather change, near-miss — triggers a stop and re-briefing. Record the re-briefing on the daily log.
