Night Work Safety
Managing night-shift construction safely on UAE sites — lighting, visibility, fatigue, neighbour impact, security and authority-permit conditions for after-dark works.
Learning Objectives
- Comply with UAE municipality night-work permit conditions.
- Provide adequate task and area lighting to safe illuminance levels.
- Manage fatigue, shift patterns and worker welfare after dark.
- Enforce high-visibility PPE and traffic separation at night.
- Control noise, dust and light-spill impact on neighbours.

1. Municipality Permits
Night works (typically 20:00–06:00) require a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Dubai Municipality, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Sharjah or Trakhees — depending on emirate and zone. NOC conditions cover permitted activities, hours, noise limits, and neighbour notification. Work outside NOC terms triggers stop-work and fines.
2. Lighting Design
Task lighting minimum 200 lux for general work, 500 lux for reading drawings and inspection, 100 lux for circulation. Avoid glare — angle down, diffuse or shield. Emergency lighting on independent supply. Batteries or generator with automatic changeover — no single point of failure that plunges the site into darkness.
3. High-Visibility PPE & Traffic
Class 3 hi-vis (jacket + trousers or coveralls) for all workers on night shift, retroreflective bands intact. Vehicles: rotating amber beacons on, headlights and reversing lights checked. Pedestrian routes lit continuously — no dark stretches between towers.
4. Fatigue & Shift Patterns
Human circadian rhythm dips 02:00–06:00 — accident risk rises sharply. Limit night shifts to 8-10 hours, schedule a 20-minute rest break every 2 hours, rotate high-risk tasks, provide a warm/well-lit rest area. Journey home after night shift is a major risk — arrange transport for long commutes.
5. Neighbour Impact — Noise, Dust, Light
Noise limits at property boundary typically 55 dB(A) at night (jurisdiction-specific). No high-noise plant (breakers, piling) without special dispensation. Wet down for dust. Light-spill: shield fixtures so residential windows are not directly illuminated. Log complaints and respond within 24 hours.
6. Security & Emergency Response
Reduced staffing at night raises theft and unauthorised-access risk — perimeter lit, security patrols, CCTV recording. Emergency response plan tested for night conditions: first-aider on shift, evacuation muster clearly signed and lit, hospital route pre-briefed. Site radio/phone always answered.
