Module Content

1. Why Mental Health Is a Safety Issue

Construction workers are 3–4× more likely to die by suicide than the average working population. Poor mental health directly impairs concentration, reaction times, decision-making and increases risk-taking — every one of those is a direct incident driver on a live construction site. Mental health is not a soft topic; it is a Category-A safety hazard.

2. UAE Risk Factors

Migrant construction workers commonly face: separation from family for long periods, financial pressure (debt, remittance obligations), isolation in labour camps, long hours in heat, language barriers to accessing support, and stigma around admitting distress. Layered on top: fatigue, sleep loss and Ramadan/heat schedules amplify existing vulnerability.

3. Warning Signs to Notice

Watch for: withdrawal from team and toolbox talks, more errors than usual, lateness or absenteeism, appearance changes, irritability or emotional flatness, giving away possessions, or comments like 'I'm a burden' or 'everyone would be better off without me'. One sign is a nudge; a cluster over 2+ weeks is an alarm.

4. The ALEC Model

A — Ask directly, with genuine care ('You don't seem yourself lately — are you OK?'). L — Listen without judgement; do not fill the silence. E — Encourage action: suggest they speak to a GP, MOHRE support hotline, or your EAP. C — Check in — follow up within 48 hours and again the following week. Correct in private; never raise it in front of a crowd.

5. Emergency Escalation

If a colleague expresses suicidal thoughts, says they feel like a burden, or indicates a plan: do NOT leave them alone. Call UAE Emergency Services 999. Stay with them until help arrives. Notify the site manager and HSE. This is a safety emergency — treat it with the same urgency as a serious injury. Do not wait until end of shift.

6. UAE Welfare Standards & Support

Employers must provide: clean toilets and washing facilities, cool rest areas, drinking water, a private space for personal calls, and reasonable rest between shifts. Support routes for workers: MOHRE Worker Support Hotline 800 60, project EAP if provided, GP referral through health insurance, and 999 for emergencies. Signpost these on every welfare board — in the languages spoken on your site.
