Learning Objectives

  • Apply the TILE (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) assessment to any lift.
  • Use correct lifting posture and body mechanics.
  • Recognise when a team lift or mechanical aid is required.
  • Identify ergonomic risks in repetitive or awkward tasks.
  • Report early MSD symptoms before they become chronic injuries.

1. Why It Matters

Manual handling injuries are among the top three causes of lost-time injury in UAE construction. Most are cumulative — back, shoulder and knee strains from repetitive lifting, awkward postures and poor workstation setup rather than one-off accidents.

2. TILE Assessment Before Every Lift

Task (distance, twisting, frequency), Individual (fitness, training, PPE), Load (weight, shape, stability, sharp edges), Environment (floor, lighting, obstructions, heat). If any factor is unsafe — stop and re-plan. Above ~25 kg for men / ~16 kg for women, use a team lift or mechanical aid.

3. Correct Lifting Technique

Feet shoulder-width, one slightly ahead. Bend at knees and hips — not the back. Grip firmly, load close to the body, lift smoothly using leg muscles. Never twist while lifting — move your feet. Lower with the same care as lifting.

4. Team Lifts & Mechanical Aids

Nominate one leader for team lifts, agree the count, match heights where possible. Use trolleys, sack barrows, pallet jacks, or lifting appliances (forklift, crane, tele-handler) for anything heavy, awkward or repeated. Trained banksman for mechanical assistance.

5. Ergonomics in Repetitive Work

Vary posture and task every 20–30 minutes. Anti-fatigue matting at fixed stations. Tools sized to the hand (grip diameter, weight, trigger force). Overhead work: use platforms so shoulders stay below head-height. Rotate workers on high-risk tasks.

6. UAE Requirements & Reporting

Federal Decree-Law 33/2021 and ADOSH-SF CoP require manual handling training and risk assessment. Early symptoms (persistent ache, tingling, numbness) must be reported to the site nurse or supervisor — early intervention prevents chronic MSDs.
