Know your source

Record whether drinking water comes from the utility mains, a tanker, or a treatment unit. Tankered water must come from an approved filling station only, and the tanker must be licensed and used for drinking water alone — never for any other load.

Tank cleaning and disinfection every six months

Clean and disinfect storage tanks and the distribution system at least every six months, using a company approved for the work, and keep the certificates on site.

Sample the water at least every six months

Take samples a week after each routine clean and disinfection, at least every six months, after any emergency disinfection, after major changes or maintenance to the system, and whenever a new water source is added.

Report non-conforming results

What to ask the laboratory to test

Microbiological: Total coliforms, E. coli, heterotrophic plate count, and Legionella where the system stores or heats water. Water must be free of pathogens, algae, fungi, insects and protozoa.
Chemical and heavy metals: The chemical parameters in UAE.S GSO 149:2021, typically including lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nitrate and nitrite.
Acceptance / operational: pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, colour, taste, odour and residual chlorine.
Ice: Microbiological testing of ice for human consumption every six months (UAE.S GSO 384:1994).
